The Karmanos Cancer Center’s Gershenson Radiation Oncology Center is our primary teaching institution. Gershenson treats 120 patients per day (60 percent of the system volume) dominantly with external beam and numerous special procedures: intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery, high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, total body irradiation (TBI) and neutrons now with a multileaf collimator. We have one of two functional neutron units fashioned for clinical use in the U.S. Residents train in an environment of multidisciplinary care with emphasis on research. Karmanos is one of 39 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S. and together with Wayne State University they are conducting more than 400 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials.

The Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center, another Karmanos site, opened in 2001. This 18,000-square-foot cancer treatment center offers radiation oncology and chemotherapy treatments in an atmosphere designed to provide comfort and healing.  The Radiation Oncology Center at Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center offers rotations with broad exposure to disease sites.  When rotating at Weisberg, residents are able to participate in Tumor Boards held throughout Karmanos Cancer Center as well as Journal Club and other didactic sessions held at Gershenson via video conference.

The Charach Cancer Treatment Center at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital (HVSH) is a community-based center providing residents with a broad exposure to disease sites and a brachytherapy service. Kimberly Hart, M.D., residency program site director, is an expert in compliance and helps residents integrate radiation oncology clinical practices with high quality medical documentation.  introduces first year residents to a structured approach to documentation. While on rotation at HVSH, residents participate in tumor board, new patient conference and chart rounds and are involved with clinical research. Residents are able to participate in the Journal Club and other didactic sessions held at Gershenson via videoconference.
