Sinai-Grace Hospital Radiation Oncology Department
The Sinai Grace Hospital (SGH) Department of Radiation Oncology was established in its current location in 1999 during the merger of Grace Hospital and Sinai Hospital, with a joint staff. The current building was established in 1992. This is an integrated department with radiation oncology working closely with medical oncology. The Breast Care Center is also located within the Department of Radiation Oncology building so that we may offer comprehensive care to our female patients.
The center at SGH offers elective and “senior service” rotations with broad exposure to disease sites in a hybrid multidisciplinary environment that includes faculty practice and community-based medical oncologists. When rotating at SGH residents participate in the SGH Tumor Board and Chart Rounds.
Equipment and technology:
- The department uses a Varian IX Silhouette with dual energy capabilities as well as several electron energies which was installed in 2006.
- It utilizes a Siemens Mevasim simulator which was installed in 1992. The deparment offers interstitial prostate implants utilizing I-125 seeds.
- Patients are sent to CT in the Radiology Department for aide in treatment planning. The images are electronically transferred to a Varian Eclipse Treatment Planning system that was installed in 2006. The Eclipse treatment planning system plans conventional treatment as well as IMRT. This system, as well as the treatment unit is integrated with the IMPAC patient management system. This was also installed in 2006. This system is used for patient/staff scheduling and billing.
- IMPAC is integrated with the Detroit Medica Center’s billing system. The deparment is scheduled to have an upgrade in the Eclipse treatment planning system in the near future.
