Oncology is a branch of clinical medicine concerned with the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer and certain nonneoplastic conditions. Radiation Oncology studies the use of ionizing radiation in treatment of these conditions and the safe use of radioactive substances and their potential hazards. Radiation oncologists are an integral part of the multidisciplinary team that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of the cancer patient.

The Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center radiation oncology residency training program has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since 1973. The program offers four years of postgraduate training, PGY-2 through PGY-5.

Before entering the program, residents complete an ACGME-acceptable first year of training at a program of their choice. The radiation oncology residency at WSU/DMC is approved for a total of eight residents.

The goal of our program is to produce highly-trained professionals - competent, caring and compassionate radiation oncologists - capable of functioning independently in any clinical setting. We seek to identify and train those individuals capable of an academic career and foster their preparation to that end.

In addition to residency training, the department offers 4-week rotations to 3rd and 4th year medical students and residents from other programs.
